Winter Weather Protocol

Parents,

Winter weather season is upon us and with that in mind, we want to make sure that our families understand Treynor CSD's winter weather protocol. In the event of a late start, early dismissal or school cancelation due to dangerous road conditions or severe windchill, we will use JMC's Message Center to send a text message, email and phone call to parents and/or students. For that reason, it is recommended that you log into the JMC Parent Portal and check your contact information to ensure it is accurate and that the appropriate options are selected for phone notifications.  If you need help with this, please refer to the JMC Parent Notification Guide.

The phone call is the only guaranteed communication, because the system will attempt to call you back up to 3 times if there is a busy signal or no answer. While text messages are the easiest and quickest, it is up to the carrier to deliver that message to you and it also relies on your cell phone having good service to receive the message. An email message is not always a timely way to receive communication, but we will still use that as a third method for weather notifications. We will also post to Treynor CSD X/Twitter and Facebook pages.  Lastly, we notify local TV stations as a convenience, but we have found they don’t always put out the notices right away, therefore do not rely on this notification method.

Please add the following email address and phone number to your phone's contact database, so these messages do not go to spam.

  • Phone Number for TCSD JMC: 833-591-1607
  • Email from JMC: tcsd@onlinejmc.com

If there is no school or an early dismissal due to the weather, activities and practices will also be canceled unless otherwise stated.

This is also a good time to review backup plans with your child in the event of an early dismissal, so they know where they would need to go. This plan should also be communicated to your elementary child's teacher ahead of time.

Student and staff safety is always our primary concern when thinking about decisions related to school cancelations, late starts, and early dismissals. A big part of this decision-making is the forecasts we receive from the National Weather Service and as we know those can sometimes miss slightly with the timing of things, but the overall weather impact is typically accurate. We do have a policy in place that if the windchill is -35 degrees or below, school and activities are canceled.

The Iowa legislature allows schools to use 5 days or 30 hours of virtual learning to avoid losing learning time due to school closures. In our case, a virtual learning day is something that takes some planning and therefore only used when the forecast is predicting some extreme weather or temperatures. Virtual learning will typically only be considered  if we had excessive cancelations or lost school time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this notice and for checking your JMC contact information and reviewing your own emergency plans.
